The Revolutionary River Documentary

Philadelphia Museum of Art Curator of Education Mary Teeling addresses the audience at the Philadelphia premiere.

The new documentary about the Schuylkill River region, "Our Nation Heritage Episode One: The Revolutionary River," was broadcast on WHYY on Tuesday, June 8, preceded by an interview with SRHA Executive Director Kurt Zwikl. Since this was during the station's Spring membership drive, a DVD of the film was offered as a thank you gift that evening. The response to the film was great and a total of 40 DVDs were sold! We now have the DVDs available for sale at our headquarters in Pottstown. Call 484-945-0200 for more information.

"Our National Heritage Episode One: The Revolutionary River" is a 47-minute film produced for public television by Telemark Films, on behalf of the Schuylkill River National and State Heritage Area, in partnership with the William Penn Foundation, the National Park Service, and the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. It is the first in a six-part series, “Our National Heritage,” that explores various National Heritage Areas in the eastern United States. It will be shown on public television stations across the nation when the series is complete, and will also be made available to educational institutions throughout the region. This is an opportunity for the Schuylkill River region to garner national attention. The documentary serves to help the Schuylkill River Heritage Area educate the public about the tremendous value the Schuylkill River has to the region and the nation.

Featuring dramatizations and interviews with historians, geologists and other experts, the film takes a detailed look at the history of the Schuylkill River region. It includes fascinating information about the Lenni Lenape tribes and early European settlers that once inhabited the region, as well as a thought-provoking look at the pollution that once threatened the river, and the environmental efforts that rescued it.

The Schuylkill River Heritage Area held a two premiere events in March for this exceptional documentary, and both generated a great deal of excitement about the film from all who attended. On March 21, more than 100 people watched "The Revolutionary River," in the Philadelphia Museum of Art's beautiful Van Pelt Auditorium. One week later, a similar number attended the Schuylkill County premiere at the wonderfully restored Sovereign Majestic Theater in Pottsville.
