MORE DETAILS

Join Schuylkill River Greenways for a private and free tour of the Wharton Esherick Museum, home and studio of famed American artist Wharton Esherick located atop Valley Forge Mountain in Chester County.

The museum campus is set on 12 wooded acres and comprised of multiple buildings including Wharton Esherick’s Studio, now the centerpiece of the museum. Esherick’s highly individual, hand-built Studio was constructed over a 40-year period beginning in 1926, incorporating Arts and Crafts, Expressionist, and organic designs. Two years later Esherick began his 1928 Expressionist garage, now the visitor center. In 1973, just one year after its official opening as a museum, the Studio was added to the National Register of Historic Places. In 1993, the Museum was designated a National Historic Landmark for Architecture.

Tours last about an hour to an hour and fifteen minutes. Please arrive 10-15 minutes before the tour starts.

THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND

  • Low heeled shoes only please! This helps protect the museum floors. Guests may be asked to wear shoe covers (over their shoes).
  • Casual photography is permitted on tour (no tripods please). Videography is prohibited.
  • You are allowed to touch large wood surfaces at the Wharton Esherick Museum and we encourage you to do so! However, for the safety of our collection, please refrain from touching anything made from other materials. Additionally, please do not pick up any objects or open any doors or drawers of the furniture — your docent will gladly demonstrate the furniture for you!
  • Food and drink are not allowed inside the Museum.
  • Large bags and backpacks are not permitted in the Museum. If you bring them along, you may be asked to return them to your car.
  • The immersive nature of the Studio, with nothing behind glass or velvet ropes, can be confusing for kids (and adults too!). Please help us keep our collection safe by talking with your family about our Museum guidelines.
  • Strollers won’t help much! Tours include multiple staircases and small spaces.
  • A changing table is available in the visitor center restroom.

There is a parking lane along the trail.
