Schuylkill River Project Dam and Basin
The 820-ft. long by 46-ft. high concrete gravity dam that creates this lake was built between 1949 and 1950 as part of the “Schuylkill River Project.” It was designed & constructed to trap, contain, and remove the coal silt that was clogging and killing the Schuylkill River. Today, most of the coal silt has been removed. Boating and fishing are popular and productive pastimes at this 163-acre impoundment. Largemouth bass, brown bullhead, yellow perch, bluegill, white suckers, and chain pickerel are all found here again. On RL near the dam is the Auburn Impounding Basin, where the coal silt that was pumped from the Schuylkill was deposited and harvested. Dredging structures and equipment can still be seen here. For more information about the Schuylkill River Project, visit the store for printed Paddler’s Guide to the Schuylkill River Water Trail.
