Since its inception in the 1970’s the Schuylkill River Greenways (SRG) has a long and rich history of working to restore and protect the Schuylkill River as both a natural and recreational resource for our communities and residents. The influence and significance that the river plays in our region cannot be understated as it provides almost 2 million people with drinking water.
The SRG uses many ways to successfully promote stewardship of the River including recreational events, educational programs, as well as on-the-ground conservation projects. Over the last 20 years the annual Schuylkill River Sojourn has introduced more than 3,000 people to the Schuylkill River, while at the same time drawing attention to our organization and its mission as well as to the great work of our partners. Additionally our new Schuylkill Explorers youth education program has impacted almost 1,000 children in our local communities over the last three years.
As one of our organizations four main goals identified in our strategic plan, (Re)Turn to the River, our work in this area centers on raising awareness and understanding of water quality issues through public/private partnerships, outreach initiatives and funding programs aimed at promoting conservation and maximizing opportunities to educate children and adults through programs, events and projects.
