Places to Visit Near the SRT
The Schuylkill River Trail connects residents and visitors to the beautiful, historic communities it passes through. The trail, which runs alongside the revolutionary Schuylkill River, is a pathway to fun recreational activities and sites. The Schuylkill River Greenways National Heritage Area is ample with attractions and historic places, many of which are accessible right from the trail. While using the trail, make it a full trip and explore the counties of the heritage area at the same time.
Berks County
Berks County is a diamond-shaped urban area in southeastern Pennsylvania. The Blue Ridge Mountains, part of the bigger Appalachian Mountain range, make up the the northern and southern borders of the county.
Chester County
Chester County is located in southeastern Pennsylvania and borders Maryland. It was one of the three original counties established by William Penn in 1682 after he founded the Pennsylvania Colony.
Montgomery County
Montgomery County was originally part of Philadelphia but those that lived in the upper region wanted a new county to shorten the distance to the county seat. Montgomery County was created on September 10, 1784 and was named after General Richard Montgomery.
Philadelphia
Philadelphia is located in southeastern Pennsylvania where the Delaware and Schuylkill rivers meet. William Penn founded the area in 1682 as one of the three original counties of Pennsylvania Colony. Philadelphia is not only known for its statewide milestones but the impact it had on the entire nation.
Schuylkill County
Parts of what was originally Berks and Northampton Counties became Schuylkill County in 1811. The region was named after the Schuylkill River which is Dutch for “hidden stream.” Schuylkill County is known for being a central piece of the anthracite Coal Region.
