The National Iron & Steel Heritage Museum is a project of the Graystone Society, a 501(c)3 public charity registered with the Pennsylvania Bureau of Charitable Organizations, whose mission is to promote an understanding of the iron and steel history of Coatesville, Chester County, Southeastern Pennsylvania and the region to audiences of all ages and interests by collecting, preserving, exhibiting and interpreting iron and steel’s history and its relationship to the region and nation beyond.
On your tour in the historic district, you will begin your tour in the Lukens Executive Office Building, built in 1903 to accommodate the growing administrative needs of the company. Inside the office building, you can view exhibits about the steel making process and the many very recognizable products around the country that have been made with Lukens steel (like the Space Needle, Veteran’s Stadium, the USS Nautilus and the deep sea submersible Alvin.) Touring the rest of the district, you will see the three mansions of the Lukens/Huston families: Brandywine Mansion, Terracina and Graystone. Visit our original narrow-gauge locomotive, which transported scrap within the Lukens complex, as well as our Navy sonarsphere, and admire the historic railroad bridge which spans the Brandywine River Valley. Your tour might include a stop at our firehouse, where you can view an original Lukens fire engine from 1947 and an ambulance from 1965.
